Quick Tips to Minimize Leather Smell
Share
Dealing with the strong natural leather smell of a new or well-crafted leather bag is a common occurrence. While the distinctive aroma is often appreciated by leather enthusiasts, it can be overwhelming for some.
To reduce the strong natural smell of leather in a bag, you can simply ventilate the bag by leaving it in a well-ventilated area, ideally outside or near an open window. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can dry out and damage the leather over time. Allow it to air out for several days to a week. Fresh air helps dissipate the strong odors naturally.
You can try one of the few simple methods below:
-
Use Baking Soda
Place the baking soda in a small bowl or breathable pouch (like a coffee filter or a cloth bag), then put it inside or near the leather bag. It’s best not to apply baking soda directly on the leather. Baking soda can be abrasive and may damage the leather's finish if applied directly. Baking soda absorbs odors and can help lessen the leather smell. Leave it for a day or two, then check if the scent has improved. -
Activated Charcoal Packs
Activated charcoal is another great odor absorber. Place a few small charcoal packs in the bag, or in a breathable container, and leave them for a few days. -
Use Coffee Grounds (in a breathable pouch)
Coffee grounds can neutralize strong odors. Put dry coffee grounds in a cloth bag or breathable container and leave it inside the bag for 24-48 hours. Just be careful, as coffee grounds can stain if they come into direct contact with the leather. -
Use White Vinegar
Lightly spray a mixture of white vinegar and water (1:1 ratio) onto a soft cloth and wipe the inside of the bag. Vinegar is a natural deodorizer, and it can help lessen the leather’s strong smell. Let the bag air out after wiping. -
Leather Cleaner And Conditioner
Use high-quality leather cleaners and conditioners designed to neutralize odors. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully to clean and condition the leather. Regular maintenance can help reduce odors and keep the leather supple.
By following these methods, you can effectively manage and reduce the strong natural leather smell of your bag, making it more pleasant for everyday use while preserving the quality and longevity of the leather.
